Jiho Won has been creating installation pieces which contains history. During the past, a pedestal played significant role for the historical monument. It helped the audiences to worship and to look more important. A material such as marble or stone with dark properties of matter, infuse patroitism to the audience. These kind of tradition of monuments has been shifted and extended with modern sculpture. In some pieces, the ¡°pedestal¡± has been disappered, stuck on the ground, repeatition appeared. They are connected with the location and the space. Jiho Won applies the nature of historical monuments on modern sculpture territory.
Originally, the historical monument is placed on location where many people gather, and it played a significant role of displaying nation¡¯s authority. As people¡¯s personal memories, feelings of sorrow are added to the political monument, its signification is changing. After Maya Lin¡¯s Vietnam Veterans Memorial, the definition of historical monument has been approaching differently.  The memorial went on to become among the most recognizable designs in the world, and heralded a sea change for memorial design, breaking with classical conventions and dramatically changing the discourse of a typology. The memorial comprises two walls of polished granite. A chronological list of the dead and missing begins at the center, moves along the east wall and then from the far west side back to the apex.
Jihon Won¡¯s installation has something in common with Maya Lin¡¯s artworks.
A material of Jiho Won¡¯s artworks are mostly from consturction site. He has created a flag that is momentary, not authoritative. Also, he placed artworks on the ground and showing elements of Minimalism. In these ways, he continutes the history of ¡°extended memorial¡±. Especially through this exhibion, he creates the monuments for the future event that has not occurred yet. A giant rubber plate will be pleaced on the basement of the gallery space. The synthetic rubber is the main material that is needed for the war. By placing the giant rubber plate on the ground with chemical smell, hero-centered history can be displayed horizontally. On the 2nd floor, it shows future works that contain the past thorugh transparency. The time clock has been moved to the future. However, they are a reflection of the flow of history. This exhibition can remind the future events that might happen pretty soon. However, it does not meaning that his artworks are promoting the war. Jiho Won¡¯s installations are full of hope that could stop trajedic events. Current affairs are changing from moment to moment. Audiences can ponder and examine the change thorough this exhibiton, and each can observe the exihibiton with their own hope for the future.(Yoon-jeong Go, Total museum press editior in chief)
