This exhibition is a closing and final exhibition touring Nagoya(2007), Shanghai(2008), and lastly Seoul(2010) under the title, 'City of Gaze.'
'City of Gaze' is composed of two words, 'gaze' and 'city.' The active one staring and being stared at as of "the other" or "background" are always existent in the definition of the word, 'gaze.' Also it foreshadows various emotional tones depending on the status of the gazer. For instances, looking outside from the inside of the space, enjoying the opened view, slowly scanning around, repeating unnecessary movements, seeing hazily, slowly approaching to some point...etc. However, at any circumstance, gaze exposes the gazer's existence.
On the other hand, 'city' pursuits grandiose spectacle formed by integrated numerous skyscrapers. The city transforms constantly and endlessly due to cultural, economical, and social factors, while developing and changing belonged individuals' life style. Spectacle of the city not only holds diverse subjects of and to gaze, but also reminds of a hollow city with anonymous individuals gone, like in a blockbuster.
'City of Gaze' is a virtual city through viewers' actual and physical experience between the miniature [city] composed with architectures of Nagoya, Shanghai, and Seoul and [gaze] through the projection made by a camera, the mechanical eyes. |
