Biography
Ku Myung Seon selects models to reflect her personal reality, weaving them into her narrative to shape her interpretation of a girl (少女考). She cuts images of women from magazines, internet games, catalogues, overcoding them with manga to create new characters.
Long dark hair, lean neckline, deeply hollowed collar bones and starry eyes. Born at the tip of Ku’s pencils, the girls are beautiful yet expressionless delivering an unfamiliar energy.
The repetitive process of drawing, erasing and smearing lines demonstrates foundational skills commonly seen in Koran college entrance exams. Using these techniques, the mid-tones, shadows and highlights of the black-and-white photographs are effectively conveyed. As a result, the artist’s expressive intent is infused into the girls’ depiction, thereby enriching the emotional depth of the artwork
The faint aura surrounding the girl’s body, depicted in a medium shot against a dark background, specifically conveys a sense of instability and fragility. Moreover, it represents the nature of the virtual entity created just for the artwork.
