Inside Resonance: Yohan Hàn
From November 29 to December 19, 2019, Yohan Hàn’s solo exhibition titled 《Inside Resonance》 will be presented at Gallery Chosun. Hàn explores the relationships between performance, sculptural objects, and media, with a focus on how communication happens between them. After working mainly in France, this exhibition is his first solo exhibition since returning to Korea.
In this exhibition, Yohan Hàn focuses on the situations and meanings that arise between a performance and what it leaves behind. The exhibition is based on two performances held during the exhibition period, but the performances themselves are not shown in the gallery in any form. What is displayed are the clothes worn by the performers, books made by the artist and used in the performances and a chat window that records conversations between performers and audience members. Some active or lucky visitors may see the performances in person and take part in the open chat, but the exhibition stands on its own even without the performance. The show invites reflection on the relationship between an absent performance and the materials left behind and raises fundamental questions about how performance works today and what it means to perform.
The exhibition title 《Inside Resonance》 refers to a term created by the artist to describe how a basic unit of performance, a “movement”, is transformed across different media, as well as the movement produced through these transformations. Today, gestures are shaped by fragmented communication on social media and the internet. As a result, the body becomes increasingly broken into pieces, leaving traces across many kinds of materials. The exhibition explores both the possibilities and limits of communication through the body under these conditions.
