Gallery Chosun will hold Lee Yunseo’s solo exhibition 《Painting painted Painting》 from October 11 to 31, 2023. Lee works by taking the endless stream of online information and images and turning them into paintings. In this exhibition, she paints the surface-level landscape of information we see today and reflects on the distorted “original sources” hidden within it.
Lee quickly records afterimages of the images she sees on her smartphone, one after another, onto the canvas. As she keeps capturing each fading image in this fast rhythm, her paintings come to hold the restless, shifting landscape of today; a landscape that moves too quickly and no longer has depth.
The series 《Painting painted Painting》, which shares its name with the exhibition, turns written or visual information into loose impressions and gestures. The artist then uses these first paintings as subjects for new works on different surfaces. Rough judgement, imperfect memory, hand movements, brushstrokes, and the shift in size or proportion all warp the “original source” and turn it into something new. This process mirrors how information today keeps circulating, losing context, becoming distorted, changed, and reinterpreted.
Lee’s paintings reflect not only today’s information environment but also how individuals’ attitudes and perceptions change alongside it. For example, tragic events in real life are endlessly reproduced online through countless words and images, which can dilute their weight or leave only a sense of noise. Her works, with quick brushstrokes and fragmentory forms that linger like glitches, mirror our present experience, constantly moving at high speed and often slightly out of sync with reality.
