장치의 기능성: Sungyoon Jung
Gallery Chosun will present an installation exhibition by Sungyoon Jung from August 18 to September 1, 2012.
The exhibition, titled 《장치의 기능성》, explores how the human desire and belief in speed through machines appear and how they come to an end. The artist asks: even so, why do people feel a strange sense of release when they lose control of speed and move closer to danger or death? How does desire, expressed through machines, affect human perception? In this exhibition, visitors are invited to operate the machines themselves. By doing so, they can observe their own act of releasing desire and consider the potential of mechanical devices.
《장치의 기능성》 seeks to expand the boundaries of media art by reversing the usual relationship between machines and the people who control them in modern society. They project questions the modern logic of speed. It focuses on machines that produce contradictory results and on the act of operating them. Instead of emphasising visual display, as much media art does, the exhibition highlights the viewer’s action in activating the machine. This action creates its own sense of time and history.
The machines do not hide their mechanisms behind smooth surfaces. Instead, their structures are exposed, asking viewers to focus on their own actions. By staging situations where the roles of human and machine seem reversed, the work raises questions about the difference between people and machines, about action and reaction, and about the gap between them.
