어부들: Jo Seub
Gallery Chosun will be hosting a photography exhibition by Jo Seub from October 8 to November 5.
Jo Seub tackles serious themes with humour, creating striking images that playfully exaggerate himself. His work has ranged from sharp critiques of capitalism to subversive ideological imaginings, ultimately capturing lively yet intense slices of the life in comedic scenes.
This exhibition, set against the backdrop of Jeju, uses exaggerated gestures and humorous actions of figures from an ambiguous time to convey local emotions and struggles. Beyond the specifics of place or era, it reveals hidden truths of life that everyone living today inevitably faces.
Artist’s Note
“My work begins at the point where rational response becomes unclear in the reality of late capitalism. I create ruptures in the prevailing ideology by colliding contradictory concepts: reason with violence, logic with leaps, grief with cheerfulness. But what I really want to explore is the ironic subject that unexpectedly emerges at these points of collision.
Through playful yet subversive imagination, what I stage is not a comfortable utopia of rational subjects, but the barren ground one must cross to reach mutual understanding and community (Jo Seub)
