병렬적 교통: Jung Sanghyun
Gallery Chosun will host Jung Sanghyun’s exhibition 《병렬적 교통》 from July 22 to August 5. In this series, Jung focuses on the strange experiences that occur when two very different things meet.
As in his previous work, the frame plays a key role, creating an ambiguous boundary between two unrelated materials. The frames around the granite pieces are made of 2mm-thick cement. The pairing of granite and cement, along with the idea of a book made from granite instead of paper, challenges our usual understanding of books and feels deliberately unfamiliar.
Another work, a pull-up bar constructed from stickers printed with metal textures, follows the same idea. Extending from his earlier series 바위 (Rock), it contrasts the fragile material of paper stickers with the solidity of steel. Visually, it appears as solid metal, but its actual material is paper. The paradox creates a surprising and engaging effect for viewers.
The artist’s curiosity for entirely new and unfamiliar outcomes continues in his media installations. A circular media structure, which resembles a tree in the digital age, moves in repeated circular motions. As it rotates, the screens quickly overlap, creating the image of a vast forest. The full image only emerges after the structure has operated, so the repetition of the form leads to an expanding shape whose result cannot be easily predicted, sparking viewers’ curiosity.
Jung’s approach consistently seeks to capture chance, irony, and unexpected experiences. From the initial concept to the finished work, he selects materials by chance, identifies the unusual or unfamiliar among them, and allows these choices to guide the final outcome. The unpredictable interactions of these elements create surprising, unfamiliar experiences for the audience.
This exhibition invites viewers to see Jung’s new interpretations of how entirely different materials or forms can meet to produce wholly unexpected results.
