평평한 것은 동시에 생긴다: Eve Kwak
Gallery Chosun presents Eve Kwak’s 《평평한 것은 동시에 생긴다》 from August 12 to August 25. The exhibition explores the artist’s long-standing focus on systems and environments through architectural space, hosted across three venues.
At the first venue, Gallery Chosun, Kwak presents sculptures addressing the formation and imagery of architectural space and its modes of consumption. Notably, 걸음(Step)(2015), at the stairway, modifies real stairs’ scale and height, creating a steep incline that wears and marks over time through visitor movement
Upon entering the exhibition, visitors encounter 면대면(Face to Face)(2015), which functions as a pixel that creates another mutable space within the gallery. Assembled in box-like units, the work can be unfolded or become three-dimensional, producing a shifting landscape.
In a corner of the gallery, a set sculpturally transforms the book 『다른 13가지』(2014). Made using floor plan data from a specific apartment complex under construction in 2014, the pages are layered to reflect unit quantities and perforated for tearing. During the exhibition, the perforations are torn and turned into sculptural forms, while the emerging spaces and the subtle emotions of the process are filmed. When no filming takes place, previously recorded footage is screened in proportion to the accumulated material.
