2021 Everything I Want to Do Is Nonproductive, 인천아트플랫폼, 인천

This two-person exhibition takes the exhibition space itself as a san-sil (産室, “birth room”), where Yang Ji-won and Choi Soo-ryeon both primarily working with drawing and painting—shared their interest in letters and language by adopting wall drawing as a common method. The letters and images on the wall are drawn under the temporary condition of remaining for a certain period before disappearing. In this process, the two artists share the experience of repeatedly suspending their work in unresolved states, observing the reciprocal relationships between the works.

In Slogan Practice, a state emerges in which voices proclaiming opposing values are intermingled. On one side, the pursuit of virtue and punishment of vice is advocated, while on the other, the triumph of evil and absurdity is declared. The wall transforms into a chaotic site where propagandistic phrases collide with one another. The drawing stops at the preparatory stage of enlarging slogans—laying out the words, slightly adjusting their placement, refining their forms, and marking the colors to be painted. The more the designs are revised, the smaller each voice becomes.
