Biography
Seoyoon YI
Seoyoon YI works by planning without planning, drawing and erasing, brandishing and soothing, and constructing her canvas through these actions. She paints freely without distinguishing between abstract and concrete, using unfamiliar shapes and brushstrokes, unfamiliar colors, and various materials. She freely gestures without predefined meaning and carves eyes, noses, and mouths upon them. Here, figures, animals, landscapes encountered by her in reality, or fictional creations produced by reality appear. Sentences she has collected are recombined to become the titles of her works. Seoyoon YI graduated from the Printmaking Department at Hongik University in 2017, completed an exchange semester at Lucerne University of Applied Sciences and Arts in 2019, and graduated with a Master of Fine Arts in Flat Plastic Arts from the Korea National University of Arts in 2021.
Major Works
Seoyoon YI works by moving her body unplanned in front of the canvas, inserting shapes she has seen or imagined in reality. Facing an empty canvas, she begins by filling the screen with paint and spray, responding to the colors and shapes sprayed on the canvas with impromptu gestures. The dialogue with the painting continues, and the colors and shapes that initially filled the screen remain as traces. The conclusion of this dialogue is capturing a certain form that is suggested by the color and shape of the canvas without a concrete figure. Impromptu movements are embodied and based on experiences and questions ingrained in the body, knowledge, and learning, while icons are interpreted differently based on the contemporary visual environment. Through impromptu movements and icons based on the present, she feels the present, understands the relationship between the artist, the work, and the world, and continues to ask essential questions.
